Bread is the essence of life—it’s what sustains us every day. Jesus told us to ask for our daily bread each day. What is this daily bread? Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). Jesus is our daily bread. We are to feast on Him every day.
While wandering through the wilderness, the Israelites were fed daily with a bread that fell from Heaven. Manna, they called it, What is it? On a desert journey, where there was no source of sustenance except God alone, they looked for their daily portion of manna to meet their needs. Today we have a new manna from Heaven. Jesus explained to his disciples, “This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever” (John 6:58). By feeding daily on Jesus, we look to Him for everything we need, whether we’re still wandering through our wilderness or already in our promised land.
In Lebanon, bread is served with almost every meal. Whenever you eat your bread, think of Jesus. In everything you do, remember Jesus. This month we are reminded to trust Jesus every day at every moment for everything we need. Where are you looking for your sustenance? Are you looking to Jesus or are you looking to your own efforts to provide for you, fulfill you, and sustain you?
What is our role in this exchange? Jesus provides Himself as the living bread, and our part is to eat of His eternal life. Receive freely everything that God has provided for you so graciously through His son Jesus Christ. Remember that without Him, you can do nothing. But through Him, you can do all things.
