Contemporary models of Christian missions are being dramatically tested by the unprecedented conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Realities of social distancing, travel restrictions, increased government tracking, and economic decline are challenging the way individual missionaries, sending agencies, and receiving ministries can conduct “business.” While frustration about the situation is warranted, this pandemic offers the opportunity to critically evaluate both our concepts and practices of mission in the 21st century world. Considering important, often uncomfortable questions can be a truly fruitful exercise for the Church. As the world is forced into a type of “pandemic pause,” the time is ripe to rethink the ways we understand and do missions.
This self-reflective discussion on mission is particularly urgent within the Middle Eastern context. The historical legacy of regional missionary efforts boasts inspiring testimonies of gospel impact and examples abound of vibrant contemporary missional initiatives and partnerships extending kingdom witness in transformative ways. At the same time, the Middle East presents considerable challenges stifling or preventing mission work from taking place across settings. 2020 has seemingly opened a new chapter on the story of missions in the region; COVID-19 is adding complexities to ministry in Middle Eastern contexts and requiring new exercises of crisis response and management. A genuine discussion has the potential to elevate our vision of missions in the Middle East and beyond by helping direct the Church further into faithful witness of Christ.
This webinar will discuss how the pandemic impacts our resolve to extending this witness to diverse peoples in the MENA region as well as the innovation required to meet such a challenge. Historically, the body of Christ has often been at its best in times of chaos and crisis. Of course, there are limitations to be considered and pitfalls to avoid. But we have hope, and there are many opportunities ahead. For faithful followers of Christ in uncertain times, a renewed apostolic imagination is required.
