Theological education programs in the Middle East have long contended with complex local, regional, and global challenges in their mission to deliver meaningful instruction to students, and now they join the world in confronting the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Working at a frantic pace, teams of administration and faculty have modified academic programs to accommodate new realities of this increasingly dynamic situation. 2020 is proving to be a truly profound period for many institutions.
The need for vibrant theological education in the Middle East is certain but the future of educational initiatives in the months and years ahead is – to say the least – uncertain. Even so, faith fuels the belief that God is working to stir the Church and prepare seminaries and schools to play meaningful roles in serving the kingdom. The COVID-19 crisis will end, a “new normal” will settle in, but what will the impact of this historical moment be and how can current responses lead to enduring change? These are questions warranting serious conversations that recognize present challenges while embracing hope in God’s good plans for the Church.
